The City is moving forward with Phase 2 of the Main Street Infrastructure Upgrades, which includes replacing underground water, sanitary, and storm sewer infrastructure, reconstructing the Killarney Brook Bridge, and implementing elements of the Main Street Urban Design Plan to create a more vibrant and inviting streetscape.
What to Expect:
Traffic Impacts:
- Main Street will be closed to through traffic from approximately late June to the end of November.
- Traffic will be detoured via MacFarlane Street. See detour map.
- Access to businesses and residences will generally be maintained, though short periods of restricted driveway access may occur.
Public Transit Impacts:
- Public transit routes will be detoured around the construction area for the duration of this project.
Pedestrian Access:
- Sidewalks will remain open throughout construction.
- Pedestrian routes may be adjusted temporarily near the bridge work.
- Accessibility concerns will be monitored, with alternate routes provided if necessary.
What is Being Accomplished?
- Infrastructure Renewal: Replacing aging underground utilities will enhance service reliability and improve stormwater management.
- Urban Design Enhancements: Streetscape improvements will create a more inviting, walkable Main Street, in line with the Main Street Urban Design Plan.
- Bridge Replacement: The aging Killarney Brook Bridge will be replaced to improve safety and support long-term infrastructure needs.
The Benefits:
- Improved Safety & Accessibility: Upgraded infrastructure will enhance pedestrian and cyclist safety while ensuring accessibility for all users.
- Reduced Congestion: Modernized road design and improved traffic flow will help alleviate congestion.
- Enhanced Infrastructure: New underground utilities and a stronger bridge structure will provide long-term service reliability.
Additional Upgrades:
Main Street Urban Design Plan Implementation:
- Streetscape improvements make Main Street more inviting for residents, businesses, and visitors.
- Potential enhancements to public spaces, trails, and connections to surrounding neighbourhoods.
Flood Protection:
- Upgraded storm sewer infrastructure will metter manage heavy rainfall and runoff.
- The new bridge structure will be built to withstand higher water levels, reducing flood risks in the area.
- Improvements align with Fredericton's flood resiliency efforts to protect key infrastructure.
Project Timing & Future Work
Why is This Project Being Undertaken Now?
- This work is part of a planned infrastructure renewal effort, addressing aging utilities and flood risks while supporting future growth.
- Federal disaster mitigation funding is available, making this the ideal time to proceed.
Will There be More Construction in the Future?
- Additional upgrades may be planned based on the Fredericton Growth Strategy and ongoing infrastructure needs.
Project Funding:
This project is being funded through the Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund (DMAF)
- 40% of eligible expenditures will be funded federally.
- The remaining 60% and ineligible costs will be funded by the City of Fredericton.
Are Any Trees Being Removed?
- Some trees near the existing Killarney Brook Bridge may need to be removed to accommodate the new structure.
How Does This Fit Into Long-Term Planning?
This project aligns with Fredericton's Growth Strategy and Asset Management Plan, ensuring infrastructure upgrades support anticipated growth. The Main Street Urban Design Plan will make this corridor a more attractive place to live, work, and invest, strengthening the local economy and improving quality of life for residents.
