Sanitary Trunk Sewer

Project Type:Construction Projects
Project Subtype:Major Projects

What is being accomplished?
In 1949, a trunk sanitary sewer main was installed along the northside of the Wolastoq (Saint John River) to intercept sewage that was previously discharged untreated into the river. This trunk sewer main directed sewage to the newly constructed wastewater treatment facility on Barker Street.
Over the past ten years, sections of this 1949 trunk sewer mainhave been upgraded to accommodate the City's growth. This year’s work will complete the final segment of the trunk sewer main upgrade.
The remaining section of the original trunk sewer main will be replaced from Waterford Lane through the Sitansisk Old Reserve property, reconnecting at Devonshire Drive. The pipe will be upgraded from 600mm to 900mm in diameter to handle increased sewer demand from the growing northside part of the City.

  • Overnight work will be required to complete critical sewer connections due to the high volume of sewage flow.
  • The project schedule runs from late June to early August.
  • An archaeological monitor and an Elder from the Sitansisk Community will be present during excavation portion of construction.

What to Expect:

Traffic Impacts:

  • A closure of Devonshire Drive will occur.

Traffic will be detoured as follows:

  • Northbound traffic: Use Union Street Exit from the Westmorland Street Bridge.
  • Southbound traffic: Use Main Street/Devonshire Ramp.
  • A detour map will be provided.

Public Transit Impacts:

Public transit is not expected to be affected.

Pedestrian Impacts:

  • The project will impact localized pedestrian traffic.
  • Pedestrian traffic using informal trail systems will be accommodated.

The Benefits:

This project prepares underground infrastructure for future surface upgrades, including:

  • Widening of Devonshire Drive.
  • Trail improvements.
  • A park hub at the former Carleton Street Bridge abutment.

Additional Upgrades:

This project accounts for future development plans, including:

  • The widening of Devonshire Drive.
  • Riverside community projects on Sitansisk and City properties.

Flood Protection:

Parking surface areas will be raised to reduce flood-related disruptions.

Project Timing & Future Work:

Why is This Project Being Undertaken Now?

  • This upgrade is essential for the northwestern part of the City, as all sewer flows from that area funnel into this trunk sewer main.

Will There Be More Construction on These Roads in the Coming Years?

  • No additional construction is planned for these roads after this project.

Project Funding:

This project is funded by the Utility Fund.

Are Any Trees Being Removed?

Yes, some trees will be removed in early April.

How Does This Fit Into Long-Term Planning?

This project is vital for the City’s growth, supporting long-term financial planning and asset management strategies.
