Community Tree Program

Grow With Us: Help Expand Fredericton's Urban Forest

Every year, the City of Fredericton aims to plant around 500 trees, significantly adding to our urban forest and maintaining a canopy cover of 67%. Our Parks & Trees division works diligently to manage over 21,000 street trees within City limits, and we can ensure the survival of our trees with your help!

The Community Tree Program was put in place to help care for newly planted trees that require extra care during their first years of life. While our Parks & Trees division frequently monitors and cares for newly planted trees, we ask you to join us to help make sure our trees will grow and thrive for years to come.

Why it Matters:

The Urban Forest serves a crucial role in the City of Fredericton by:

  • Cooling the city through increased canopy cover
  • Cleaning the air that we breathe
  • Reducing rainwater runoff
  • Improving mental and physical health

Read our Climate Change Adaptation Plan to learn more about the importance of our urban forest!

Here’s How You Can Help:

If you have a newly planted City tree in front of your home, you can play a vital role in its survival by:

  • Watering the tree twice a week – especially during dry weather
  • Watering the tree in the morning or evening – this reduces water evaporation during hotter months
  • Keeping the base of the tree free of weeds or garbage
  • Refraining from pruning the tree – trained arborists from the City will fulfill this task
  • Contacting us if the tree shows signs of damage, distress, or requires pruning

Refer to our Helpful Tree Care Guidelines Below!

If you do not have a city tree outside of your home, you can still contribute! By planting and maintaining native trees on your own property, you can add to our growing urban forest and help make the City of Fredericton more resilient to the impacts of climate change.
