Babbitt and Gill Street

Project Type:Construction Projects
Project Subtype:Neighborhood Projects

The Babbitt and Gill Street Infrastructure Project will include water, sanitary sewer, and some storm sewer upgrades on Babbitt Street and Gill Street. This will also include new curbing and asphalt.

What to Expect:

Resident/Commuter Impacts: The project will impact local traffic on Babbitt and Gill Streets. The project will also require crossing Union Street, resulting in a detour for approximately two weeks. See detour map.

Public Transit Impacts: Public transit will be impacted during the closure of Union Street for a two-week period.

Pedestrian Impacts: The project will have an impact on localized pedestrian traffic.

Benefits:

Residents will notice a brand-new street with upgraded infrastructure, improving both functionality and aesthetics.

Additional Upgrades:

This is Phase 1 of 3. Additional infrastructure projects are planned for:

  • 2026 – Further work on Gill Street
  • 2027 – Infrastructure upgrades on Dobie Street

Flood Mitigation:

The upgraded stormwater system will improve drainage and reduce the risk of localized flooding.

Why is This Project Being Undertaken Now?

A critical component of this project is the upsizing of the sanitary sewer main. Increased development in the Cliffe Street area has led to higher sewer flows, putting pressure on the existing system. The current Dobie Street/Gill Street sewer system will not be able to accommodate full buildout of the area. By starting this project now, new development can continue without compromising existing services in the Devon area.

Will There Be More Construction on These Roads in the Coming Years?

Yes, there will be two more phases of this work in 2026 and 2027.

Are Any Trees Being Removed?

It is not anticipated that any trees will be removed for this project.

Does This Link to a Long-Term Financial Plan, Asset Management, and/or Growth?

Yes, this project supports Fredericton’s long-term financial plan and asset management strategy by renewing aging infrastructure and reducing the city’s infrastructure deficit. Additionally, it will support the full buildout of the Cliffe/Cuffman Street development area, ensuring the sewer system can accommodate future growth.
