181 Northumberland Street

Description

This 1 ½-storey wood frame dwelling, which dates from the 1870s, is situated on the west side of Northumberland Street between Brunswick and George Streets.

Heritage Value

The heritage value of this dwelling is not only associated with the development of Northumberland Street but with the Broderick family. Patrick Broderick, from County Kildare, Ireland, immigrated to New Brunswick in 1851. His brothers, Christopher and Walter Broderick, who had emigrated years earlier had become successful Fredericton businessmen. Patrick Broderick settled in Fredericton, residing on Regent Street with his siblings. He engaged in a variety of trades before opening his own grocery store on Northumberland Street in the early 1870s. Patrick Broderick moved to this house and established his grocery store in a building located adjacent to it.

Patrick Broderick conducted a successful grocery business for 27 years, and his death in 1896 was widely regretted and mourned. His wife, Bridget Broderick, died two weeks later, suffering from the same pneumonia which claimed Patrick Broderick. The Broderick family owned this house for more than 30 years.
