Garbage Collection

The following items are not collected:

• Hot Ashes: Be sure to let ashes cool for several days before bagging it and putting it in your garbage. Alternatively, add cooled ashes to your home compost or use it to melt ice or create traction on driveways and sidewalks.  
• Household Furniture and Furnishings: Donate gently used furniture or furnishings to a local charitable organization like Habitat for Humanity ReStore or Seed the Need, contact a furniture store to see if they recycle, or bring the furniture or furnishings to the CRSC Landfill for disposal.  
• Construction and Demolition Debris: Bring your debris to the CRSC Landfill for disposal.
• Batteries: Visit Recycling for information on proper disposal.
• Hazardous Waste: Visit Hazardous Waste for information on proper disposal.

Curbside garbage collection is provided to residential properties, including single and double housing units, individual townhouses, condominiums, and apartment buildings with four or fewer units. This includes properties added to the city as part of the province of New Brunswick’s Local Governance Reform. Eligible properties must have proper garbage containers and be accessible by the collection truck.

The City of Fredericton is divided into five collection zones. Select a zone on the map below to find out which day garbage is collected in your area. Be sure to have your garbage at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on collection day.

Garbage is collected on all holidays except for Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Check the City of Fredericton website, social media, or contact Service Fredericton at 1+ (506) 460-2020 for more information on rescheduled collections.

Several factors can lead to garbage not being collected, including:

• Timing: Be sure to have your garbage at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on collection day.
• Weather: If the roads are too dangerous to drive, collections may be delayed to the following day or the next scheduled collection date. Check the City of Fredericton website, social media, or contact Service Fredericton at 1+ (506) 460-2020 for more information on rescheduled collections.
• Ineligible: Make sure your items are eligible for collection (Read the What items are not collected? section for a list of ineligible items).

Store the garbage until the following scheduled collection date or bring the garbage to the CRSC Landfill for disposal.

No bins are provided by the City of Fredericton. Residents must purchase their own garbage bins.

Containers must be watertight, equipped with handles, and have a properly manufactured lid. Containers without wheels can have a capacity of 75-120L, while containers with wheels (dollies) can have a capacity of 240-360L. For more information on acceptable containers, please contact FERO, the City of Fredericton’s collection contractor.

Garbage bags ranging from 50-120L are accepted, but the weight per bag must not exceed 50 lbs.
