Traffic management in the City of Fredericton is guided by the Capital City Traffic Study (PDF). This study, first developed in 2000, was updated in 2010 following 18 months of development that included extensive public consultation. The final report provides City Council with a list of recommendations for prioritizing improvements that address current traffic issues, changes in infrastructure, and future travel demands. The City is currently in the process of updating its traffic study.
The report gives the city short-term, medium term, intermediate term, and long term recommendations for improving its transportation network. It also attaches a price tag for each recommendation that will have to be borne by the municipality and/or the Province of New Brunswick, which is responsible for maintaining provincially-designated routes within the city limits.
